The French Senate voted a resolution that will criminalize the rejection of Armenian allegations pertaining to the incidents of 1915, and approved it on Monday. The resolution will recognise the incidents as ‘genocide’, and envisage one-year prison term and 45,000 Euros fine for those who deny the genocide recognized by French laws. The French Parliament had recognized the 1915 incidents as genocide on 29 January 2001.
The law proposal was approved by the Parliament on 22 December 2011, and it gathered wide protests from both Turkey and Turkish citizens living in France, which led to escalating tension between the two countries.
A French senate committee rejected the resolution on Wednesday, but this committee's votes will not prevent the resolution becoming law.
