Fenerbahçe’s jailed President Aziz Yıldırım, and 92 others charged in the scandal allegedly involving 19 league matches last season appeared before the court for the first time on Tuesday at the İstanbul 16th High Criminal Court in İstanbul’s Silivri district. The court heard allegations about a match-fixing scandal that shook the foundations of Turkish football since 3 July last year. The hearings are expected to continue until the weekend.
Yıldırım is charged with establishing and running a criminal organization to make unfair profits, fraud, and match-fixing, including offering players financial incentives for individual matches. The Fenerbahçe President is accused of rigging matches between Fenerbahçe-İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor, played on May 1, 2011; Kardemir Karabükspor-Fenerbahçe (May 8, 2011); Fenerbahçe-Ankaragücü (May 15, 2011), and Sivasspor-Fenerbahçe (May 22, 2011). A jail term of some 22-72-year is demanded for Yıldırım who has denied any wrongdoing.
Mehmet Ali Aydınlar, the head of the Turkish Football Federation, and two of his deputies resigned in January this year after a controversy on how to deal with teams implicated in match fixing. The Parliament voted for the new reduced term of a maximum three years in prison, overriding a veto by President Abdullah Gül. The President argued that the amendments were giving the impression of a special arrangement to save suspects including Aziz Yıldırım, Fenerbahçe’s President.
Thousands of Fenerbahçe fans chanted slogans and held banners outside a court house in support of the arrested suspects in the case. Military forces took intensive security measures as Fenerbahce fans chanted slogans outside the court house in support of the tried suspects at the İstanbul 16th High Criminal Court in Silivri district. Turkey’s league champion Fenerbahçe was barred from the Champions League because of its involvement in the match-fixing scandal.
