The first face-transplanting operation of Turkey took place in Antalya province of Turkey last month. Ahmet Kaya’s face was successfully transplanted to Uğur Acar, while his arms and right leg were donated Atilla Kavdır.
Following a dispute about a TV channel’s allegedly ‘unethical’ interview with Mr Acar, his doctors decided to have him attended a rushed press meeting on Tuesday for the first time after the operation.
“I feel great. I thank to the donor family,” said Mr Acar, who has so far made a good recovery. Acar’s brother also attended the press meeting in which the patient was observed to have difficulty in speaking.
Ahmet Kaya (38), a textile worker, was run over by a train, and went into cerebral death after a suicide attempt that occurred in Uşak province of western Turkey early January this year. Mr Kaya was badly hospitalised after his suicide attempt, and remained in a hospital for 12 days. He went into cerebral death on 20 January, and his organs were donated by his family which led to a first in Turkey. The organs were transferred from Uşak to Akdeniz University’s Medical Faculty Hospital in southern province of Antalya on Friday night.
Mr Kaya’s face was successfully transplanted to Uğur Acar (19), while his arms and right leg were donated Atilla Kavdır (34) who was shocked 23 years ago and lost both of his arms and his right leg. The face transplantation was the first of its kind in Turkey.
