The "Captain June Monument" was opened in memory of the British environmentalist June Haimoff, who died at the age of 100 on April 23, known as the "Mother of caretta carettas" due to her dedicated effort for the protection of sea turtles that have breeding grounds in Iztuzu Beach in Dalyan town of Ortaca district of MUGLA.

June Haimoff, who was fascinated by Dalyan when she came with her boat in July 1975, and then settled in 1984, was known for her efforts to protect sea turtles of caretta carettas. Her struggle to stop the construction of the hotel, which was started on the beach, made Haimoff well known in Turkey and the world and continued the generations of caretta carettas. Haimoff, who met with the then Prime Minister Turgut Özal in Ankara, played an important role in the establishment of the Private Environmental Protection Agency.

In memory of Haimoff, during the opening ceremony of the monument, Murat Kurum the Minister of Environment & Urbanization and Climate Change, Ortaca Mayor Alim Uzundemir, Dalaman, Ortaca, Köyceğiz Touristic Hoteliers and Operators Union Association (DOKTOB) President Yücel Okutur and municipal staff, as well as many Britons, attended. June Haimoff, who died of organ failure on April 23 at her home in Dalyan, Ortaca district of Muğla, was sent off on her last journey according to Islamic methods upon her will.
